This is the home of information about New Zealand railways, trains and trams – where you can ride and see heritage railways with steam, diesel and electric trains and heritage trams in action. We also have information about railways-related historic places and museums you can visit. Whether you're looking for railways, trains and trams near where you live, in another part of the country or near where you'll be staying when you visit New Zealand, you'll find the information you need to see about New Zealand railways, trains and trams on this website.
How the New Zealand Trains and Trams website works
On the Find Railways, Trains and Trams page there is a map that shows train and tram sites grouped by region. When you click on the map a list will open that displays the railways, train and tram organisations in that area. There are clickable links that will take you to the websites of those operations to get a comprehensive description of what they offer and what you'll see when you visit.
Preserving the spirit of New Zealand rail heritage and history
While in many countries small rail groups are struggling, in New Zealand the heritage rail movement is thriving. There are more than 75 groups preserving, and in many cases operating, heritage railways.. This is a GREAT place to see and ride trains from all eras.
The New Zealand railways, train and tram organisations detailed here are all members of the Federation of Rail Organisations of New Zealand. The vast majority of these are maintained and operated by volunteers though a few are commercial operations. Each in their own way is keeping the spirit and heritage of trains and trams alive.
Steam Trains in New Zealand
There is nothing quite as awe-inspiring as seeing an historic steam train operating – especially when you can see AND ride that train. There are many places to see and ride steam trains in New Zealand, and we have links to those places on this site. Click on the Find Trains/Trams link on the left and click on the area you're interested in. You'll find references to all kinds of steam trains you can see and ride!
